A Moonlit night full of Love

June 19, 2011

Last evening, Mr Cupcake-and-Bake and I took part in the annual Rowan’s Hospice Moonlit Memories Walk – a 12 mile walk held in the wee small hours of the night and taking in the sights of Southsea and Portsmouth.  The hospice, established in 1994,  is based just down the road from us, in Purbrook near Waterlooville and relies solely on its fundraising activities and public donations to cover its yearly operating costs of £3.7million.

We had an amazing time, despite a good soaking of rain from mid-way onwards, and I congratulate the team at The Rowan’s and their team of volunteers for laying on a superbly well-organised event that left nothing to chance – they really looked after Jeremy and I and our 1600 fellow walkers during our 4 hour walk, supplying bottled water, fruit, sweeties and encouragement the whole way round!   Highlights for me were the rousing send-off, the sight of The Royal Marine’s Museum lit up in its night time splendour plus Spinny, Victory and Warrior at The Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays all beautifully floodlit…. we certainly saw our City in a different light last night!  Here is the route we took.

Everyone walking had their own personal reasons for taking part, and to read the dedications written across the backs of many of the participants was a truly emotional experience.   Me? I did it in memory of my darling Dad, who we lost to cancer in 1983 – and I thought of him a lot as we walked last night and this gave me the strength to continue despite aching feet, hips and shins!   One thing I definitely realised last night is that my fitness level has gone through the floor since I took part in the 25 mile London Moonwalk in 2006, and as I’ve just registered my interest to walk the London event in 2012 I realise that a good program of training is most certainly required!!  On with the virtual walk…..

Next up in the Rowan’s fundraising calendar is “The Big Push” on June 15th – sounds like fun and you can get details by clicking onto this link.  In the meantime, if you’re able to spare a few pennies for our sponsorship for this walk please donate on our Just Giving page.

Good luck with any fundraising activities you’re taking part in!
